Drastic Plastic challenge
Posted on July 17th, 2010 5 commentsI’m just doing a little horn tooting today. It’s been over a year since we last had plastic baggies in our house, of any size. Yes sometimes this has been a huge pain! Like where do you put a half used onion, if you put it in a plastic container the container stinks for life. But the feeling of keeping so many sandwich baggies out of the landfill is worth it! I will say there are days when it would be so nice to shove a sandwich into a little plastic baggie and then throw that baggie away when done, but after the first few months it was easy.
If your feeling up to the challenge, try giving up the one use plastic baggies.
There are a lot of cool other options out there.

check out some of these sites

Heyy! I found your blog on the Green Follow Friday & I just wanted to let you know that you have a new follower!!
I’ve seen some really cute fabric sandwich bags on etsy.. definitely might be worth checking them out! Its awesome, that you made the switch and I’m hoping to do the same. What did you decide to use for your half used onions, by the way? Hehe.

I just typed up a whole comment to you, but I notice it didn’t post… so if you do see two comments from me, that is why.

I know what you mean about using plastic containers for food instead of bags, I do the same thing. I started making a kitchen soap to handle the smells from a bar of soap, coffee grounds, and water. I just grate one bar of soap (any type), add 1 tsp of coffee grounds, and 1 tbsp of water. Microwave, for 45 seconds at a time stuirring between heatings, until it is melted. It will still be sort of clumpy. I then pour it into a mold (cup cake papers work well) and allow to set for 2-3 days. This is an ugly looking soap, but it really does remove the smells from knives, cutting boards, containers, and your hands without leaving everything smelling like coffee. We will be posting this recipe soon on the PMC website, so let me know if you tried it and if you liked it.
By the way, I definitely like your ideas about going green! I’m getting there, slowly but surely!
